Secure Socket Layer from MyOrg
What is an SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client-typically a web server (website) and a browser, or a mail server and a mail client. SSL protocol determines variables of the encryption for both the link and the data being transmitted.
Do I really Need an SSL?
First off Google is giving a rankings boost to sites using SSL.
If you can answer yes to any of these questions than Yes you need a SSL.
- Do you want to get better ranking in Google?
- Does your small business website have sensitive information?
- Do es your site have memberships?
- Does your site sell any fom of product?
- Do you have an form od medical data?
The simple answer is Yes, your small business users wiill appreciarte the seriouasiness you took to add an SSL Certificate to your site.
Although the risk to the website may not be that great, the risk to individual users may be significant in some cases. For instance, any user accessing your website from a public wifi connection (such as at a coffee shop) can be eavesdropped on fairly easily by other users at the same location. Eavesdroppers can see what is typed into forms on non-SSL sites, so the risks will depend on what sorts of forms you have.
Pricey certificates are targeted at companies with large budgets. They require complicated legal verification procedures and operation history that are just excessive for someone who needs a simple SSL for a Facebook app or login page.
Not all SSL are the Same
All SSL certs provide your website with security, but there are varying levels of it. The bigger the key, the harder it is to decode. Most browsers/operating systems currently work at 128-bit level, which is quite secure according to modern security standards. 256-bit encryption
level can be reached if numerous factors match - when your site's hosting settings and your visitors' browser settings are configured to operate at 256-bit level - but this is mostly out of your control.
According to Google: In addition to SEO-friendly website structure, unique content, quality internal/external links and site speed optimization, having all pages encrypted now also increases your site's search engine ranking. And by "all pages", in this case, we also mean subdomains.
Domain Verification Process
Whenever you order an SSL certificate (whether a new SSL or a renewal), you must verifiy domain ownership. This is required by the SSL issuer and is not something we can avoid. There are two ways to verifiy domain ownership: Email or HTML File.
